About Amadalavalasa

Amadalavalasa is a small town located in the district of Srikakulam. This district is a part of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality and is assigned under the jurisdiction of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority. The district was found by Budumuru Navajeevan Kumar and is spread over a wide area of approximately 19.65 km 2 (roughly 7.6 sq mi). The official language of this town is Telegu. The exact coordinates of Amadalavalasa is 18.4167°N 83.9000°E and has an average elevation of 29 meters above sea level (98 feet). According to the census of 2011, the population of the town was 39,799 to 51% of it is male and 49% female.

History of Amadalavalasa

Amadalavalasa has been a part of the reign of Ashoka, where it was known as Herandapalli. Heranda means ‘castor oil’ in Sanskrit. Later, it was named as Amadalavalasa which also means ‘the town of castor oil’. Ironically, there is no production or cultivation of castor oil plants in this town whatsoever at present.

There has also been a recent discovery of early historic man and his activities in the hills of Sangamayya Konda, in Amadalavalasa Mandal.

Sangamayya Konda

Being 3 km away from Amudalavalasa, it is a Buddhist site and is also well-recognised for the Jain vestiges and Buddhist monasteries which were discovered in the recent past. A freelance archaeologist organised excavations on the hills of Sangamayya Konda and discovered historic Dolmen, Menhir, Cave, Caverns and Cisterns.

Danthapuri (Danthavarapukota)

Danthapuri (Danthavarapukota) is located near Amadalavalasa and is among the known historic places of the town. It is situated on the route from Amudalavalasa to Hiramandalam and is 10 km from Amadalavalasa. Ancient Buddha stupas are present in this place. The archaeologists found some bricks, pots, nabed wear, terracotta articles, bangles, beads, stone and iron articles in the historic archaeological site also called Boudha Gynana dantha puri.

The nearest and well-connected airport for access is the Visakhapatnam Airport, which is just 114 km away. All these railway stations and airport are synced together via bus routes. However, Srikakulam APSRTC Bus Station, Narasannapeta APSRTC Bus Station, Rajam APSRTC Bus Station is in close proximity to Amadalavalasa.
